If you're landing on this page because a contactor just failed and you're trying to figure out what to order, take a breath. In my role coordinating urgent replacements for industrial and electrical customers, the first thing I say is: there is no single 'best' Siemens contactor.

Scenario 1: Replacing a Failed Siemens Contactor
Last month, a maintenance manager called at 2 p.m. with a dead agitator contactor and a 6 a.m. shift start. We had 16 hours. The first thing I asked was not 'what brand do you want?' It was 'can you read the catalog number?'
If the contactor is in front of you, this is the fastest route:
- Copy the full type designation. Examples: 3RT2015-1BB41. If it starts with 3TF, it's an older SIRIUS generation; if it starts with 3RT, it's the current SIRIUS line. Both appear in existing panels, and they are not identical.
- Check the coil voltage and frequency. 24V DC is not the same as 24V AC. 110V AC is not the same as 115V AC for a DC coil. The coil data is printed on the front of most SIRIUS contactors or on a label on the side.
- Count the auxiliary contacts. Siemens contactor auxiliary contacts are often the reason a 'perfect' replacement doesn't work. You need to know if your circuit uses a normally open (NO) auxiliary contact for a PLC feedback signal, or a normally closed (NC) contact for a hold-in circuit. When the label is damaged
If you can't read the part number, don't panic. You can still identify the coil voltage by tracing the control circuit. And if you want to confirm the coil is actually drawing current, you can use a multimeter—more on that in Scenario 3.
Scenario 2: Specing a Siemens SIRIUS Contactor From Scratch
When there's no old part to copy, the decision tree changes. The most important number is rated operational current at the right utilization category, not horsepower alone.
According to IEC 60947-4-1, contactors are selected by utilization category. In industrial motor work, AC-3 is the standard for starting and stopping squirrel-cage motors. For resistive loads and non-inductive heaters, AC-1 is common. If you're switching lighting bank loads, look at AC-1 or AC-5a, not just AC-3.
Here's what I'd do for a motor application:
- Find the motor FLA on the nameplate.
- Choose the coil voltage from your control system. If you're feeding from a 24V DC PLC, choose a 24V DC coil. If you're using a 120V or 230V control transformer, choose that instead.
- Select a SIRIUS 3RT2 contactor whose AC-3 current rating at your line voltage equals or exceeds the motor FLA.
- Add an overload relay with the proper motor FLA range.
Here's the advice that goes against what many plant electricians assume: Don't oversize the contactor just to 'have margin.' A contactor is not a fuse. A larger frame can make the panel harder to service, and the coil consumption, terminal spacing, and wiring distances can cause more hassle than they solve. If you want reliability, verify the coil voltage and auxiliary contacts, then trust the catalog table.
Searching for 'Siemens SIRIUS contactor' on a website is fine as a starting point. But a search phrase like 'siemens sirius contactor seo title examples' will only take you to product pages—what you actually need is the datasheet table. SEO titles don't tell you whether the device is AC-3 rated at 22A or 32A.
Scenario 3: 24V DC Contactor for PLC and Automation Systems
A '24V DC contactor' is not just any contactor with '24V' in the label.
Siemens SIRIUS 3RT2 contactors are available with DC coils, and they have separate ordering codes from AC coil versions. If you run a 24V AC coil on DC, or a 24V DC coil on AC, you can end up with a contactor that chatters, hums, or burns out the coil. The catalog is very specific. So am I.
One common trap: assuming a PLC output can directly drive a large 24V DC contactor coil. It often can't. For a larger frame, use a small interface relay between the PLC and the contactor coil. Check the coil inrush and holding current on the Siemens datasheet before you wire it.
How to Set Amp Gain with Multimeter (When Checking a DC Coil)
Technically, 'amp gain' on a multimeter is usually called the amp range. Here's the fast version:
- Plug the red lead into the A (current) jack, and the black lead into COM.
- Set the dial to DC amps: DCA. If you're checking an AC coil, use ACA.
- Put the meter in series with the coil. That means break the wire and let current flow through the meter.
- Start on the highest current range (10A) and step down until you get a readable value.
If the contactor doesn't pull in and the meter reads zero, you probably have a control circuit or coil problem. If it reads high current but there's no mechanical click, you might have a mechanically stuck contactor. Don't leave the meter on the current range when you're done—measuring current across a voltage source is a fast way to blow a fuse.
Scenario 4: C30CNE Lighting Contactor Replacement
Let's clear this up. C30CNE is a lighting contactor series from Eaton, not Siemens. I've had customers ask for a 'C30CNE Siemens' before. There isn't one. But you can still find a Siemens-based solution—if you know what the C30CNE was doing.
The C30CNE is mechanically held. The coil closes a latching mechanism, so the contacts stay closed without continuous coil power. A standard electrically held SIRIUS contactor drops out when power is removed. Those are not interchangeable without changing the control diagram.
For a Siemens-based replacement, compare:
- Number of poles (typically 3-pole lighting contactors).
- Coil voltage.
- Whether the control circuit expects mechanical latching.
- Rated operational current for lighting loads, not just motor AC-3 ratings.
If the panel is designed for mechanically held operation, ask your Siemens distributor about SIRIUS mechanically latching contactor arrangements. If it's an electrically held lighting contactor, a standard SIRIUS 3RT contactor can work. But don't let anyone hand you a standard contactor as a 'cross' for a C30CNE without asking that first question.
Which Scenario Are You In?
Here's how I'd decide quickly:
- If the old contactor is in your hand and you can read the label, start at Scenario 1.
- If there is no old contactor and you're designing a new circuit, start at Scenario 2.
- If the control voltage is 24V DC and the drawing says 'DC coil,' start at Scenario 3.
- If the part you're replacing was called a lighting contactor, and especially if the label says C30CNE, start at Scenario 4.
Even after years of doing this, I still double-check before sending a recommendation. I've made the mistake of assuming a coil voltage once, and it cost a client a weekend of downtime. That's why I don't pretend there's a one-line answer.
