The right contactor for your application isn't a single part number. That's the first thing I tell anyone who calls with a smoked contactor and a deadline. Whether you need a Siemens motor contactor, an HVAC replacement for a Goodman unit, or you're just trying to figure out if the part is actually bad before you spend money — the answer depends on what you're switching, how often, and who's going to be standing there with a meter.
In the last seven years, I've coordinated over 200 rush orders for industrial and commercial clients. A decent chunk of those were contactor replacements. And the more I do this, the more I split every inquiry into three scenarios. There's no universal "best" contactor. There's only the right one for your specific situation.
Three Scenarios, One Decision
Basically, the calls fall into three buckets:
- You're choosing a new contactor for a motor application, usually from a Siemens catalogue, and you need the right frame size and coil voltage.
- You're replacing a failed contactor inside a Goodman AC condenser, and you're wondering whether a Siemens part can drop in.
- You're not sure the contactor is even the problem — you want to test it before ordering anything.
Scenario 1: You Need a Siemens Motor Contactor
Scenario one is the easiest one if you read the catalogue the right way. Siemens contactor catalogue data starts with utilization category — AC-3 for squirrel-cage motors, AC-4 for reversing or jogging duty. Most people skip that line and go straight to the current rating. That's a mistake.
Take the 3RT series, for example. A 3RT2015 is rated roughly 7 A AC-3. A 3RT2025 is around 12 A. A 3RT2035 is about 22 A. Those numbers are for 400 V AC motors according to IEC 60947-4-1. You'll find the same data in the current Siemens Sirius catalogue, but the online configurator is more up to date than the printed book. My rule of thumb is to pick a contactor with an AC-3 rating at least 15% above the full-load current. If the motor does a lot of starting and stopping, I go up one frame size for extra mechanical endurance.
Coil voltage is the other trap. A Siemens contactor coil comes in 24 V DC, 110 V AC, 230 V AC, 400 V AC — you need to match your control circuit. I lost a day in 2022 because someone ordered a 24 V DC coil for a panel that was running 230 V AC. The part number looked right, same frame, same contact rating. The coil was wrong. That's why I tell people: read the full part number, don't just search for "siemens motor contactor" and hope for the best.
One caveat that's worth filing away: this approach has worked well for the industrial clients I deal with in normal indoor environments. If you're in a wastewater plant with high humidity and corrosive gases, the calculus might be different. You may need a contactor with a sealed coil or a conformal-coated PCB. Your mileage may vary, as they say. Personally, I still keep a paper copy of the Sirius catalogue in the truck, but I verify every part number online before I quote it.
Scenario 2: Replacing a Goodman AC Contactor
Scenario two is where I have to draw a boundary. I'm not an HVAC tech, so I can't speak to refrigerant circuits or load calculations. What I can tell you, from the ordering side, is that the contactor in a Goodman condensing unit is a simple device with a specific set of constraints.
You're usually looking at a one-pole or two-pole contactor rated 25 to 40 amps, with a 24 V AC coil. The original part may have a Goodman private label, but the electrical specs are generic. The question I get is: "Can I put a Siemens contactor in there?" Sometimes yes. If it fits physically, has the same coil voltage, and the contact rating is equal to or greater than the original, it will work electrically. But the word "fits" is doing a lot of work. Siemens 3RT contactors are physically bigger than most HVAC definite-purpose contactors. The enclosure inside a residential AC unit is tight. If it doesn't fit, it doesn't matter how good the brand is.
Honestly, for HVAC replacements, I usually recommend buying the OEM part or a definite-purpose contactor from a known brand. Don't over-engineer it. The goal is to match the failed part's dimensions and electrical ratings, not to upgrade the whole system.
And if you're lucky enough to find a direct fit, you'll be done in thirty minutes. If not, you're looking at returning parts and a restart. I've been on that call enough times to know which one saves everybody's weekend.
Scenario 3: Test It Before You Order It
Scenario three is the one that saves people the most money. Before you order any electric contactor, you should verify the part is actually bad. Testing a contactor coil and contacts is also the exact same skill you need to know how to test a light switch with a multimeter. It's the same logic: a switch is just a contactor without a coil.
First, switch off the power at the panel and lock it out if you can. Disconnect the wires from the contactor so you're testing the device, not the circuit. Set your multimeter to resistance (ohms) and measure across the coil terminals. A good contactor coil typically reads somewhere between 20 and 300 ohms, depending on coil voltage. An open reading — OL — means the coil winding is burned out and the contactor won't pull in.
To test the contacts, use the continuity mode or the lowest resistance range. With the contactor de-energized, normally open contacts should read OL. Then either press the armature by hand or apply the correct voltage to the coil, and the contacts should close and read near zero. That's exactly how you'd test a light switch: flip it on, check for continuity, flip it off, check for an open circuit.
One safety note: don't test a live circuit with your meter in resistance mode. I know that sounds like common sense, but in 2024 I got a call from a maintenance guy who tried it and turned a routine diagnostic into a panel replacement. The meter survived. The panel didn't.
Which Scenario Are You In?
Here's how to know. If you're selecting a contactor for a motor and you have a Siemens catalogue or the online configurator open, you're in scenario one. If you're standing next to an outdoor condenser and the label says Goodman, you're in scenario two. If the motor isn't running and you don't know why, you're in scenario three — test the coil and contacts before you spend money on a part.
After seven years and about 200 of these orders, I've come to believe that the "best" contactor is highly context-dependent. The most expensive Siemens part in the catalogue is the wrong part if the coil voltage doesn't match. And a generic replacement is the right one if the specs fit. It took me roughly 150 rush orders to understand that the process of verifying specs matters more than the brand name on the box.
